Dopamine Dressing for Interiors

Have you heard of the new term "dopamine dressing"? It's all about choosing outfits that spark joy and elevate your mood, and it’s creating a buzz in style circles right now. This concept highlights the powerful connection between what we wear and how we feel, suggesting that our clothing can be a source of happiness and self-expression.

So, why is this same principle often overlooked when it comes to interior design? Why does everyone want what's safe instead of what's magical and extraordinary? Too many people make choices for their homes based on resale value, which is absolute nonsense because the new owners will likely rip it out anyway. Why wouldn't you want to LOVE your space while you're in it?

Back in April, I shared a story on Instagram from @hansloreidesign that stated good design is about creating a feeling and that today things are engineered so you feel nothing. "Good design is about creating a feeling. What's a feeling you want to experience in your space?"

This sentiment perfectly encapsulates my frustration with fast, trend-driven design. Instead of reflecting the people who live in a space, many designs now mirror fleeting social media trends.

Take, for instance, this entryway from an OC client. It’s a testament to their desire for a home that’s both comfortable and elegant, with a touch of feline-friendly charm (thanks to one of their cats making a cameo). Their vibrant artwork collection takes center stage, bringing warmth and personality to the space. Although the wife wanted an all-white kitchen, we added character with a stunning quartzite island, with ribbons of soft greens and blues and a turquoise beaded chandelier in the adjacent breakfast nook. She was skeptical at first about bringing in color, but the chandelier turned out to be one of her favorite features. This approach not only embraced the couples personal taste but also transformed their home into a place where they truly feel joyful and connected.
