Let's get cooking...
There are so many factors that go into selecting the right appliances for your home and understanding where that puts your budget-line-item is important before starting on a remodel or new construction. Let's take a look at a few different price points. I won't touch on La Cornue which is out of most peoples price points and is mostly for aesthetics. The pricing given is a rough estimate and can vary depending on if you buy a manufacturers bundle or mix and match brands. I used the same size appliances and gas cooktops for comparison.
Thank you to Michael Sasson, of Snyder Diamond in Pasadena, for all the thoughtful insights.
In the top, Luxury/Pro category, the main players are Wolf/Sub-Zero, Viking and Thermador. These are professional chef-grade appliances for the home. For a 36" gas range, 36" refrigerator, 36" hood and dishwasher, you can expect to pay almost $30,000 (excluding any promotions/package pricing). Keep in mind that many large, gourmet kitchens will require larger ranges and refrigeration. If your entire kitchen budget is only $50,000, these are not going to be your go to brands. If you are a serious home cook, the BTU's (which is how powerful the heat is coming from a burner) are going to be important, and these are the brands with the highest BTU's on the market. Sub-Zero and Wolf offer a generous 6 year warranty and 24/7 customer service with a human, not a robot. You're paying for that level of service.
In the not-professional-grade but still luxury and tech-oriented categories, you will be looking at Miele and Gaggenau. For a Miele suite of 36" range/hood/refrigerator and dishwasher, you'll be looking at around $25,000. Gaggenau is priced similarly, but they do not offer ranges.
For the luxury division of large brand names (think Samsung, GE and Whirlpool), you'll be looking at Dacor, Signature Kitchen Suite, Monogram and Jennair. For the suite of the basics, you'll be looking at around $25,000-30,000. Side note that Monogram speed oven or 5-in-1 Advantium oven is an industry leader in the speed oven category. If you're in the LA area, reach out for where to see this in action. One great option is the new Monogram Design Center in Pasadena, which features a fully functional suite of appliances.
There are luxury brands that are extremely well built and worth your time to investigate but are only known for specific offerings. These brands are True, Perlick, Uline and Liebherr for refrigeration. Vent-a-hood, Best and Modern-aire for ventilation and Blue Star, AGA, Hestan for cooking and ASKO for dishwashers.
For the more entry-level luxury products, the brands that you'll be looking at will be the GE Café, Kitchenaid, LG Studio, Bosch and Zephyr (for hoods and undercounter refrigeration). For the 36" range/hood/refrig and dishwasher, the pricing is around $13,000. If you're looking for panel-ready products in this level, Zephyr is one of the brand that offers it. They also offer the most budget-conscious under-counter wine refrig. Italy's Bertazzoni, and Smeg, as well as New Zealand-based Fisher and Paykel have offerings in interesting colors at a price below the luxury brands.
Pricing isn't the only factor in selecting appliances. You want to consider things such as counter depth or built-in depth for refrigeration. Standard depth eats up too much real estate in my opinion and instantly makes your space look less refined. Do you want stainless or panel ready, which just means the cabinet maker will fabricate panels so your appliances are seamless with the cabinets? Do you want your hood to be stainless, stucco, stained wood or painted? Do you want gas or induction? If you're doing a new build in the state of California, Hawaii and New York, you'll be required to do induction. For remodels, you still have the choice.
